Home AAA News & Safety Drivers 65+ Invited to First-Ever CarFit Event

News from AAA Oklahoma, Feb. 23 2007 – A first-of-its-kind event to check how well drivers 65 years-of-age and older “fit” in their vehicles will be held Friday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Broken Arrow Senior Center, 1800 S. Main St. in Broken Arrow.

CarFit is a free event, open to the public. Mature drivers are encouraged to come by, driving their personal vehicle. Once there, trained CarFit technicians will perform a quick but comprehensive check of how well the driver and his or her vehicle work together to maximize safety.

The 12-point CarFit check will cover such items as mirror positioning, car seat and headrest adjustment, easy access to gas and brake pedals, clear line of sight over the steering wheel, sufficient room between the driver and the steering wheel, seat belt use and ability to look over one’s shoulder when changing lanes.

Drivers will leave with recommended car adjustments, if any, plus a list of resources, such as local occupational therapy and driver-safety courses, and greater peace of mind. Each entire CarFit check takes about 15 minutes.

To reserve a time for the March 2 CarFit event, call Kelly Reed at AAA in Broken Arrow at 455-4764. Drive-ups and walk-ins are also welcome.

Sponsors of this CarFit event are AAA Oklahoma and the Broken Arrow Police Dept. The program was developed by the American Society on Aging in partnership with AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Assn.
