Older Drivers Invited to First-ever Free OKC-area “CarFit” Event

CarFit helps mature drivers “fit” their vehicle most safely.

News from AAA Oklahoma, August 6 – A first-of-its-kind event to check how well older drivers “fit” in their vehicles will be held Wednesday, August 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, on the north parking lot of New Covenant United Methodist Church, 2700 S. Boulevard, Edmond, Okla.

CarFit is a free event, open to the public. Mature drivers are encouraged to come by, driving their personal vehicle. Once there, trained CarFit technicians will perform a quick but comprehensive check of how well the driver and his or her vehicle work together to maximize safety.

The 12-point CarFit check will cover such items as mirror positioning, car seat and headrest adjustment, easy access to gas and brake pedals, clear line of sight over the steering wheel, sufficient room between the driver and the steering wheel, seat belt use and ability to look over one’s shoulder when changing lanes.

Drivers will leave with recommendations for car adjustments, if any, plus a list of resources, such as local occupational therapy and driver-safety courses, and greater peace of mind. Each entire CarFit check takes about 15 minutes.

The sponsor of this CarFit event is AAA Oklahoma. The program was developed by the American Society on Aging in partnership with AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Assn.
